On World Youth Skills Day, young voices from Glasgow, Dundee, Edinburgh, Bradford and Newcastle told us exactly what they need to build skills for the future of work. We were listening.
World Youth Skills Day, 15 July 2026, was a wrap. Young people told us exactly what they need, and we were listening.
WYSD2026 brought together an incredible group of young voices from Glasgow, Dundee, Edinburgh, Bradford and Newcastle, and the conversation was one of the most honest we have hosted.
What young people told us
They spoke about the real barriers to building skills for the future of work; employers who still hesitate to take a chance on young talent; and why work experience opportunities matter so much, often the hardest door to get through.
They asked for spaces of their own to network and exchange ideas, professional settings built for their generation. They talked about entrepreneurship, starting a business with whatever small amount you have. And for those who already have skills that generate income, the conversation turned to giving back, not only through discounted services but through genuine support for local causes and community life.
One unforgettable line
Speaking directly to Scotland's labour force, one young person said: “Do not underestimate us. We know a lot of things. Please give us a chance, because we are the future.”
We were also pleased to welcome Nadia Aslam, who joined the session and spoke warmly about how articulate and thoughtful the young people were throughout.
