Building Future Innovators: Robokirk at the FIRST UK Tech Challenge (Season Two)

For the second year in a row, DataKirk returned to the FIRST UK Tech Challenge, and this season reinforced exactly why experiences like this matter.

We brought a group of talented young people to compete at the DECODE competition, hosted at the National Robotarium at Heriot-Watt University, alongside an impressive range of colleges and organisations. But what made this experience meaningful wasn’t just the day itself it was the journey leading up to it.

From the outset, the team committed fully to the process. They ideated bold concepts, designed with intent, and built collaboratively, learning how to navigate challenges in real time. Through testing, refining, and iterating, they developed not only a working robot, but one aimed at high-precision performance. Alongside this, they documented their journey into a structured engineering portfolio, capturing both their technical progress and decision-making.

What stood out most was how they approached the experience. Under pressure, they showed resilience. When things didn’t go to plan, they adapted. They communicated clearly, worked as a team, and carried themselves with a level of professionalism that reflects true future-ready talent.

Competing alongside other colleges and organisations added another layer to the experience. The standard was high, the ideas were ambitious, and the environment pushed everyone to think bigger and perform better. It was a space not just for competition, but for learning, inspiration, and growth.

Returning for a second season highlights the value of sustained engagement. These moments are not just about building robots they are about building confidence, capability, and a mindset that prepares young people for the future.

For everyone involved, this is only the beginning.
