The DaYii Machine Learning Project Day

Overview

On 6 July 2024, DaYii Peer Leaders from various cities across Scotland including Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Armadale, Paisley, and Stirling gathered at CodeBase Edinburgh for an inspiring and transformative day of learning and growth. This event is part of the BBC Children in Need and DataKirk’s Youth Internship Initiative (DaYii), focusing on machine learning and data science. 24 young people (13 boys and 11 girls) aged 14-22 from Scotland made it to the remarkable event.

Event Highlights

Skills Development

The Peer Leaders engaged in practical exercises, using data to train images for machine models. This hands-on experience not only enhanced their technical skills but also fostered teamwork and problem-solving abilities.

Impact on Voice and Visibility

Conclusion

The DaYii Machine Learning Project Day was a resounding success, significantly impacting the voice and visibility of young Peer Leaders in Scotland. By providing them with the skills, support, and opportunities needed to thrive, we are helping to shape a diverse and inclusive future.

Call to Action

We urge organisations across Scotland to offer internship opportunities to these talented young individuals. By doing so, you can help them overcome barriers such as migrant status and limited educational opportunities, thus paving the way for their successful careers.
